From Bytes to Bites: A PCP Tale

Third in our series, we share the stories of unique individuals from SCALA’s Professional Conversion Programmes (PCP) whose mid-career switch to the Logistics and Supply Chain sector inspire.

What do servers, routers, OS or network protocols have to do with the pet food industry?

Nothing.

Working in the world of bits and bytes, Isaac was more used to tackling technically complex issues to maintain clients’ IT hardware or network infrastructure. These days, however, Isaac Angis dealing with issues that concern the operations in the pet food company he works in.

Did you know that raw food is actually good for pets? Neither did he, and when he first joined BOM BOM, “an affordable, high quality raw diet delivered for your dog and cat,” was all he could gleam from the company’s website.

“Many pet owners were skeptical about the idea of their pets eating raw but after they’ve witnessed their pet’s amazing transformation from our products, they never looked back,” quips Isaac, as he shared his unique experience as an Operations Manager in BOM BOM. These days, Isaac works with a team with diverse backgrounds, and manages day to day operations and implementing improvement projects for the company.

The leap from IT to Operations was not an easy road. He was already in his 40s, in unfamiliar waters, and uncertain if he could handle the new job scope. Thankfully, he had a good reporting manager who gave him advice and proper guidance. He shared that managers who exercise patience and the willingness to guide and train, can play a big part in helping new staff assimilate into the company with greater ease.

He further added how he and the company benefitted from the Supply Chain Professional Conversion Programme. The Professional Conversion Programme (PCP) allows companies to employ people who have substantial work experiences into new industries, and at the same time having a huge part of the initial hiring cost subsidized, while the new hires get trained and introduced to the new industry.

Through the PCP, Isaac was able to use his hard-earned skills and insights from the IT sector to apply new innovative solutions into his day-to-day operations.

For Isaac, gone are the days when he had to work in front of monitors and staring at lines of codes, he is now happily making sure your pets get the freshest and most nutritious raw food!
